ToggleWhy utilizing artificial intelligence could unintentionally jeopardize your book, your rights, and your writing career.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has exploded into the creative world, promising everything from instant essays to fully written books. For busy writers, the temptation is real: push a button, get content. But as more AI-generated work floods the market, authors are running into serious problems — ethical, legal, and financial.
If you’re an author considering using AI as a tool or shortcut in your writing or publishing process, it’s time for a reality check. Yes, AI might be really handy for brainstorming or research, but relying on it to write your content or produce your book comes with significant risks.
Here’s what every author needs to know before letting AI anywhere near their manuscript.
AI Doesn’t Produce Original Work, and You’re Legally Responsible for What It Writes
AI is trained by reading huge amounts of text: books, articles, websites, conversations, and more. It doesn’t remember those texts the way a person would. Instead, it studies how those words and sentences fit together in patterns, creating data it can mimic later.
We like to think AI “creates” original work. It doesn’t. AI tools generate text by remixing patterns it has already learned — and that includes patterns from copyrighted books, articles, and other protected bodies of work.
This leads to two major dangers for authors:
- Unintentional plagiarism
Many authors have discovered passages in their AI-generated texts that closely resemble existing works. Even if you didn’t mean to copy, and perhaps didn’t even realize AI was copying, you are still the one who is legally accountable for the plagiarism. - Copyright complications
Copyright law regarding AI-generated content is still evolving. As of December 2025, if a work is written by AI, it may not be protected under the law. The current law states that if a human author meaningfully contributes — by selecting, arranging, rewriting, editing, or otherwise shaping the AI output in a creative way — then that human-contributed portion (and possibly the overall work) may be copyrightable. Sound confusing? It is. The bottom line: AI-generated work exists in a legal gray area, and that’s not somewhere you want to be.
For authors who depend on book sales, IP protection, and author reputation, those two items — plagiarism and copyright—are dealbreakers. But there’s more.
AI Weakens Your Author Voice (And Readers Can Tell!)
Your authorial voice is your brand. You are the reason readers choose your book over millions of others.
Even if you have taken the time to train an AI chatbot to learn your voice, the most common complaints about AI-generated writing are that the tone has been flattened, clichés have been overused, there’s little to no emotional authenticity, and the text reads as “generic” or “robotic.”
Readers are savvy. They can sense when something feels off. They’ve trusted you to create a reading experience driven by a unique authorial voice. Nothing will break that trust quicker than turning that voice over to a chatbot.
This broken trust will show up in reader reviews, and once broken, trust is extremely difficult to recoup. The long-term cost of losing your authorial voice is far higher than the short-term benefit of writing fast content.
AI Makes Critical Factual Errors
AI tools are known for grabbing data from outdated websites or articles, and even doing what techies call “hallucinating,” which means presenting false information as absolute fact. This is especially dangerous for:
- nonfiction writers
- authors giving advice on sensitive topics, such as grief, depression, and self-help topics
- authors including historical or scientific details
Using AI for research without rigorous fact-checking on your own can not only damage your credibility, it can also mislead your audience with potentially dangerous ideas. Again, you are the one on the hook for this, not the AI.

AI Publishers Are Popping Up—Authors Should Avoid These “Quick Publish” Schemes
Perhaps the most alarming trend we’re seeing right now is the rise of companies offering to publish your book without clearly disclosing that they will be using AI to produce it. These companies often present themselves as legitimate publishers, but behind the scenes there’s a tiny human team relying heavily—or even entirely—on automated tools to evaluate and edit manuscripts, format books, and even design the book cover.
Authors who fall prey to these companies often believe they are paying for professional, human-led services. Instead, they receive a manuscript assembled by algorithms with no real editorial oversight, no quality control, and no attention to voice or craft.
Worse, authors are rarely told that AI was used at all, leaving them to deal with the fallout: copyright issues, low-quality writing, and reputational damage when readers recognize AI-generated text.
Don’t Join the Data Pool
Every time you (or a publisher) plugs your writing into an AI chatbot to analyze, you yourself are becoming part of the “data” the AI learns from.
It is memorizing your word patterns, choice of metaphors, thoughts, and ideas. This runs the real risk your very same ideas (and even word choice) might show up in another author’s work when they choose to use AI to write.
Your voice, your style, your ideas… redistributed to other writers without your knowledge or consent. No thanks.
Our Zero-AI Editing Policy: Your Book Deserves a Human Touch
Great books are not assembly-line products. They are handcrafted, and shaped by human experience, emotion, intuition, and voice.
That’s why at DartFrog, we believe in elevating authors, not replacing them.
Your voice matters.
Your perspective matters.
And your story deserves the care and craftsmanship that only a human team can provide.
DartFrog Books has adopted a strict Zero-AI Editing Policy across every stage of the publishing process.
- We never use AI to analyze manuscript submissions. A real human reader, with years of experience, decides whether your manuscript is ready to be published or needs some extra work.

Your work is handled with respect, discretion, and the personal attention it deserves.
