How it Works

01. Manuscript Submission
Submit your manuscript through our Canoe Tree Press online form. This is a preliminary form designed to get to know a bit about you and your book.

02. Evaluation
Our editorial team looks over your manuscript and determines whether it is a fit for Canoe Tree. We typically have a decision made within one week of receiving your manuscript, and will reach out to you via email.

03. Onboarding
Authors accepted into our Canoe Tree Press program (and who have decided to proceed) are onboarded to our project management platform and introduced to the team.

04. Editing
Editing isn’t required for Canoe Tree books. However, if we believe your manuscript would benefit from it, we’ll let you know in our emailed acceptance letter. As an independently publishing author, the decision is always yours—but we share our honest feedback with the goal of helping you publish the strongest possible version of your story.

05. Cover Design
Our in-house DartFrog cover designer will begin by asking you a few questions to better understand your vision for the cover. While we aim to get the design as close to perfect on the first draft, the process is fully collaborative—your feedback and input are welcomed from the very start.

06. Production
From formatting your manuscript and preparing print-ready files (both print and ebook) to refining your back cover description, optimizing for Amazon, managing your metadata, and uploading to all major platforms, we handle every step of the production process—ensuring your book meets industry standards and is fully ready for publication. Since you are technically the publisher, we’ll ask you to provide ISBNs; however, if you prefer, we can assign them in your Bowker account to ensure accuracy.

07. Distribution
Most Canoe Tree books are designed for print-on-demand and uploaded to your accounts on KDP, IngramSpark, and Draft2Digital. If your project requires offset printing, warehousing, and third-party distribution, we can provide that as well at no additional cost—aside from the actual printing and shipping expenses, which are not included in the Canoe Tree flat rate. In either case, your book will be available globally in print and digital formats, and you retain 100% of the earnings.
