This debut collection throws open a door to the secret room all of us keep inside ourselves. Hill examines what life requires of us, along with the ways real lives work, in an arresting juxtaposition of visual art and poetry. The result is honest, joyful, and direct, but make no mistake: Hill also has an edge. Like the poem “Slip,” where a woman plans her life exhaustively only to drive to work and realize she’s forgotten to put on her dress, these poems are revealing, humorous, and wise about the complexities and contradictions of human hearts.

DJ Hill is a freelance writer, photographer, poet and mixed media artist. Her work has appeared in Maple Grove, Route 66, Southwest Metro, St. Croix Valley, St. Louis Park, and White Bear Lake Magazines; The Atrium, Daily Sentinel, Red Bird Chapbooks Weekly Read, Red Flag Poetry, and The Rumpus; and the poetry anthologies A View from Here: Poetry to Help You Soar, Worcestershire Poet Laureate Remembrance, and JOMP21's Dear Mr. President.

DJ's collage and mixed media art have been included in exhibits at the R2 Gallery, Red Brick Center for the Arts in Aspen, Colorado and other venues. Her poem "Harry" will appear in the first edition of Gone Dogs. DJ lives and creates at the base of Mt. Sopris. Homespun Mercies is her debut collection of poetry.
