True Origin
for Universities
A finished paper shows a result. A documented timeline shows how the work developed.
Give faculty a practical way to require students to document the development of their work—not simply submit a finished paper.
Documenting the Development of Academic Work
The Problem Universities Face
Universities can establish policies governing how students may use AI. The challenge is enforcing them when faculty typically see only the finished work.
A professor can tell students that generative AI may not be used to write a particular paper or assignment. But if the only required submission is the final paper, the professor has little evidence of how that work was actually developed.
AI detection tools attempt to fill that gap by analyzing the finished text. But these systems cannot determine whether AI was actually used. They can only estimate whether patterns in the writing resemble AI-generated text. They cannot establish authorship, and relying on them creates the risk of falsely accusing a student of using AI.
True Origin™ addresses the problem by changing the process itself.
Instead of requiring only a finished paper, faculty establish checkpoints throughout the assignment. At each checkpoint, students register the current version of their work with True Origin and submit that draft through the university’s normal LMS or other required channel.
The result is a documented series of drafts showing how the student’s work developed over time—giving faculty evidence of the writing and revision process rather than asking them to make a judgment based solely on the finished product.
A Shift from Detection to Documentation
True Origin™ changes the point at which academic integrity is established.
Rather than waiting until a finished paper is submitted and attempting to determine how it was written, True Origin creates a structured process for documenting the work as it develops.
Faculty determine the required checkpoints based on the needs of each assignment. A professor might require an initial draft, one or more revised drafts, and a final submission—or establish different milestones appropriate to the work.
At each checkpoint, the student registers the current version with True Origin and submits that same version through the university’s normal LMS or other required channel. The professor does not need to review each draft as it is submitted. The purpose is to ensure that the stages of the student’s work are documented and available for review.
Over the course of the assignment, these checkpoints create a development history that allows faculty to see how the student’s ideas, writing, and revisions progressed from one stage to the next.
Instead of trying to determine authorship from a finished paper, faculty have a documented process they can evaluate.
What True Origin Provides
True Origin™ provides the independent verification layer behind the development process.
Each time a student registers a required version of their work, True Origin creates a verifiable record that includes:
- A unique digital fingerprint representing that exact version of the file
- A permanent timestamp establishing when that version was registered
- An independently verifiable public record of the fingerprint and timestamp
The student’s work is never uploaded to or stored by True Origin. The digital fingerprint is generated locally in the student’s browser while the file remains on their device. Only the fingerprint is transmitted for registration and timestamping.
The student separately submits the actual draft through the university’s normal LMS or other required channel. The university retains the student’s work, while True Origin maintains the independent verification record associated with each required checkpoint.
True Origin documents the checkpoints. The university retains the student work.
How It Works
1. Faculty establish the required checkpoints
The professor determines when students must document their work based on the needs of the assignment—for example, an initial draft, a revised draft, and a final paper.
2. The student registers each required version with True Origin
At each checkpoint, the student logs into True Origin and selects the current version of their work from their computer. A unique digital fingerprint is generated locally in the student’s browser, and only that fingerprint is transmitted for registration and timestamping. The student’s paper never leaves their device.
3. The student submits the same version through the university’s normal system
The student also submits that draft through the LMS, email, or other method required by the professor. This ensures that the university retains the actual work associated with each required checkpoint.
4. The process repeats as the work develops
At each subsequent checkpoint, the student registers and submits the next version. Over time, the professor has access to a series of drafts showing how the student’s ideas, writing, and revisions developed throughout the assignment.
5. The professor reviews the development history when appropriate
Faculty do not need to read or grade every draft as it arrives. The drafts are available through the university’s existing system, allowing the professor to review the student’s development process when needed or as part of the assignment.
6. True Origin provides independent verification
If the authenticity of a particular checkpoint ever needs to be confirmed, the professor can use True Origin to verify that the file retained by the university matches the fingerprint registered by the student at that checkpoint. The verification occurs locally without uploading the professor’s copy to True Origin.
Why This Matters for Universities
Universities need more than policies governing the use of AI. They need a practical way for faculty to apply those policies without relying on judgments about a finished paper.
True Origin™ gives universities a standardized framework for making the development of student work part of the academic process. Faculty determine the appropriate milestones for their assignments, while True Origin provides a consistent system for documenting that those milestones have been reached.
For universities, this provides:
- A practical framework for requiring meaningful writing milestones rather than relying solely on a final submission
- A consistent process that can be used across courses and departments, while allowing individual faculty to determine their own requirements
- A documented development history that allows faculty to examine how a student’s work progressed when needed
- Stronger evidence when questions about authorship arise, because faculty can review the actual drafts retained through the university’s existing systems
- An alternative to AI detection, shifting the focus from analyzing patterns in finished writing to documenting the process by which the work developed
- A privacy-focused verification system in which student papers are never uploaded to or stored by True Origin
True Origin does not determine how students may or may not use AI. Those decisions remain with the institution and its faculty.
The university sets the policy. Faculty set the requirements. True Origin provides the framework for documenting the process.
Flexible Access for Universities
True Origin™ can be implemented at the level that makes sense for each institution—from an individual course or academic program to a department or university-wide initiative.
Institution-Managed Access
A designated university administrator can manage participation within the institution, with faculty and students organized around courses, programs, or departments.
Dedicated University Portal
Universities can operate through a dedicated True Origin portal, such as:
<universityname>.pubbound.com
Within the portal, faculty can see participating students, assignments, and completed checkpoints, providing a centralized view of the development process without requiring True Origin to store the students’ actual work.
Works Alongside Existing Academic Systems
True Origin does not replace the university’s LMS or existing submission process. At each required checkpoint, students register their work with True Origin and submit the actual draft through the university’s normal system.
The university continues to retain the student work. True Origin provides the structured framework and independent verification record that connects those submissions into a documented development process.
What Students Receive
Each time a student registers a required version of their work, True Origin™ creates a True Origin Verification Certificate documenting that checkpoint.
Each certificate includes:
- The unique digital fingerprint associated with that version of the student’s work
- The date and time the version was registered
- Verification data linked to the permanent blockchain record
- A QR code providing access to the verification record
The student’s paper is not contained in the certificate and is never uploaded to or stored by True Origin. The certificate documents the registration of the digital fingerprint associated with that specific version of the work.
As students complete additional required checkpoints, each registration becomes part of the documented development process. The actual drafts remain within the university’s existing submission system, where faculty can review the progression of the student’s work when appropriate.
A More Durable Standard
The question is no longer simply: “Was this written by AI?”
A more useful question is: “Can the student demonstrate how this work developed?”
A finished paper provides little evidence of the process that produced it. A sequence of meaningful drafts provides something very different: a record of ideas being developed, writing being revised, arguments being refined, and the work progressing toward its final form.
True Origin™ gives faculty a structured way to require and document that process. Students reach defined milestones, register each required version with True Origin, and submit the corresponding drafts through the university’s existing system.
Faculty can then evaluate the development of the work when appropriate—not by asking an algorithm to make a judgment about the final text, but by examining the student’s own progression from earlier drafts to the finished submission.
In an environment where finished content can be generated instantly, the process behind the work matters more than ever.
From Policy to Practice
Consider a professor assigning a major research paper and establishing three required checkpoints during the semester.
First Draft
The student completes an initial draft, registers that version with True Origin™, and submits the same draft through the university’s LMS.
Revised Draft
At the next required milestone, the student registers and submits a revised version. The professor may require tracked changes or another visible record of revision so that the development of the work can be clearly seen.
Final Paper
The student registers the completed paper with True Origin and submits the final version through the university’s normal submission process.
The professor does not need to review or grade each draft when it is submitted. The checkpoints require the student to begin the work earlier, reach meaningful milestones, and preserve evidence of how the paper developed. The drafts remain available through the university’s existing system for review when appropriate.
By the end of the assignment, the professor can see the progression from initial draft to revised draft to final paper—and, if questions arise, examine how the student’s ideas, arguments, and writing developed over time.
The professor determines the milestones. The student demonstrates the process. True Origin documents the checkpoints.
Get Started with True Origin
Make the development of student work part of the assignment.
True Origin™ gives universities a practical, scalable way to require meaningful checkpoints throughout the writing process. Students register and submit their work at defined milestones, creating a documented progression from early drafts to the final submission.
Faculty determine the requirements. Actual student work remains within the university’s existing systems. True Origin provides the structure and independent verification record behind the process—without student papers ever being uploaded to or stored by True Origin.
